AN EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
Day 1
“What’s that, Derek?”
“It’s a flag, of course!”
“A flag? What for?”
Derek finds the hole he dug earlier, feeling it out with his foot as his hands are full. “This is it.”
“… is what?”
“This… is where we start.” Derek raises the flag pole as high as his arms will reach, and, with one swift movement, he plunges it deep into the ground.
“Mmhmmm… I see… Well, if we’re to have a flag, I suppose we ought to have an anthem too, huh?”
“Brilliant!” Derek straightens himself, looking up at the flag, and suddenly, he breaks into song:

There is no better time than now
We have lived our lives for what? we don’t know
But today we take a vow
Sky has straightened herself sympathetically and picks up where Derek leaves off:
We’ll stand our ground with Will
O’er wind and rain and earth
To protect our Father’s seed evermore
And to Freedom give birth
By this time, a chorus of neighbors had come out of their houses and they all, standing upright, join Derek and Sky in singing the anthem:
There is no better place than here
There is no better time than now
We have lived our lives for what? we don’t know
But today we take a vowWe’ll stand our ground with Will
