THERE’S TOO MUCH I CAN’T SAY

Day 388

“Derek! … Derek! … Is that you?!” Sky-M’s face lights up with a smile that it hasn’t seen in many days now as the silhouette of a jackal head inches up from behind a hill a short distance from Derek and Sky’s apartment where both Derek and Sky are in bed, fast asleep.

Sky-M, the cat of Sky’s mind, makes haste toward the hill, exclaiming to herself, “It’s got to be him, it’s got to!”

As she runs so hopefully and happily toward the hill, the humanesque jackal reaches the top, and just as he does, he looks up, his eyes catching a glow from the moonlight, reflecting a brief glimmer straight into Sky-M’s eyes.

“I knew it! Derek! Derek!” Before Sky-M can finish her excited sentence, the jackal takes off, back down the other side of the hill. By the time she reaches the top, the jackal has disappeared completely, back into the darkness.

Her smile slowly fades as she stares down into the darkness, unable to move. Then, falling to her knees, she screams out, “Deeerrreeeekkkk! Nooooo!!” Her eyes erupt like geysers, tears running down her face and pouring down the hill in streams, as if her eyes were bottomless wells of warmth and devotion – a love unmatched in all the world; a heart that, held together by a singular hope, would forever keep beating, against all odds… for him… for love.

As the pain settles and the tears subside, dreams begin to form in the world around her – dreams of Sky and of Derek. The dreams play out around her, and she sings¹:
