THE TRIAL
“Can we stop now? Haven’t we gone far enough?” Sky asks Derek.
*Tcht* You have to cross the bridge. *Tcht* Marion instructs from the radio.
“… No, not yet.”
A few minutes pass in silence as they come up to a bridge over a large river.
“Ah, here we go…” Derek says to himself.
“Huh? What?”
“We can stop soon and find a place to sleep.”
The train of animals follows closely, crossing the bridge in the world of dreams, passing through a shield of water in the shape of a dome which surrounds the entire city. The train passes through a small gap in the shield.
“Close it up, they’re through.” Marion comments to Rain.
With a gesture from Rain, the gap closes.
Derek and Sky finally find a hotel which allows pets.
“You can just leave those bags, right? I mean, what’s in’em?” Sky asks Derek as they’re unloading the car.
“Well, clothes and stuff.”
“But we’re just leaving tomorrow, right? After nothing happens, we can leave, right?” Unable to face the alternative, Sky has completely dismissed everything Derek told her.
“Uhh… sure, if it makes you feel better, then we can leave those in the car… but I think we’re gonna be here a while.”
“Come on, let’s go.” Sky grabs the cat carrier and they both head up to their room.
“Now what?” Sky asks.
“Now… We wait.”
“Okay… … … Wanna watch some T.V.?”
“Sure.”
Derek hides his inner turmoil as they watch television and eventually fall asleep.
Suddenly, the jackal finds himself surrounded in darkness, standing before a court of the gods who turned, minus Cupid. With robe and gavel, Razor presides as judge over the entire ordeal. Surrounded by this nightmarish scene, the music begins1:
PlayEnter Cupid with book in arm. He sets it on Razor’s podium and he sings:
Good morning, Worm your Honour
The crown will plainly show
The prisoner who now stands before you
Was caught red-handed showing feelings
Showing feelings of an almost human nature
This will not do
Razor:
Call the schoolmaster!
Jax:
I always said he’d come to no good
In the end your Honour
If they’d let me have my way
I could have flayed him into shape
But my hands were tied
The bleeding hearts and artists
Let him get away with murder
Let me hammer him today
Derek-M:
Crazy
Toys in the attic, I am crazy
Truly gone fishing
They must have taken my marbles away
An army of stuffed animal zombies in military uniform circles him:
Crazy
Toys in the attic, he is crazy
Cupid:
You little shit, you’re in it now
I hope they throw away the key
You should’ve talked to me more often than you did
But no! You had to go your own way
Have you broken any homes up lately?
Just five minutes, Worm, your Honour,
Him and me alone
Delilah:
Baaaaaabe!
Come to Mother, baby
Let me hold you in my arms
M’Lord, I never wanted him to get in any trouble
Why’d he ever have to leave me?
Worm, your Honour, let me take him home
Derek-M:
Crazy
Over the rainbow, I am crazy
Bars in the window
There must have been a door there in the wall
When I came in
The army of stuffed animal zombies:
Crazy
Over the rainbow, he is crazy
Razor, standing up:
The evidence before the court is incontrovertible
There’s no need for the jury to retire
In all my years of judging I have never heard before
Of someone more deserving of the full penalty of Law
The way you made them suffer,
Your exquisite wife and mother,
Fills me with the urge to defecate!
(Go on Judge, shit on him!)
Since, my friend, you have revealed your deepest fear,
I sentence you to be exposed before your peers
Tear down the wall!
The army of stuffed animal zombies:
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
Tear down the wall!
A nuclear bomb detonates, a bomb more powerful than anything this earth has ever seen, swallowing entire cities in its path of destruction. Its blast reaches the dome of water and the intense heat begins to beat away at the water… *Tsshhhhh* Inch by inch, burning its way through…
