Prelude to a New Life
SCENE 2
[backdrop for the scene will be a red barn a little ways off on left side (stage right), with water running down on the right side (stage left) continuing with water (blue wave cutouts) on right side of stage (stage left). Sunset. Moose enters from left (stage right), walks to water, and gets in, while the ducks Randall and Cage watch from the land. Randall has medium-length moppy hair and is taller than Cage who has no hair (other than normal duck hair).]
Moose: [as he tries to cross the river] Ugh, ugh…
[He gets a few feet but it keeps getting harder and harder. You hear splashing noises. He lets out a sigh and the currents bring him back.]
[walking back out toward Randall and Cage] Rrrrr, still can’t do it…
Cage: I’ll give it another go! [rears back and runs toward the river and takes off in flight.]
[You hear wind noises as the wind picks up and blows Cage out of control and back onto shore.] Woah wooaaahh!
Randall: [laughing (duck laughing)] QwaaQwaaQwaaQwaa!
Cage: Oh whatever Randall, I’d like to see you try, you just sit on the sidelines and laugh at everyone, I bet you wouldn’t even make it one foot!
Randall: Okay, fine, you’ll see, little brother! Watch how a real man does it!
[Randall hobbles on over to the water and looks around. He sticks one toe in. He licks the tip of his wing and puts it in the air to check the wind. Then he puts his wing in front of his mouth to check his breath, then gets out some breath freshener spray, uses it, then he proceeds to do stretches like he’s getting prepped for a run. Moose and Cage are cracking up laughing at him. Then Randall is finally ready. He does one more good stretch up and lets out an exhale. He slowly plops into the water and starts to swim. He is making pretty good distance.]
Cage: Hey bro, you’re doin’ it! Yeaaahh! Keep going!
Randall: [turning head to look back at Cage] Yeeaahhh!
[Randall is happy and getting excited, so he picks up speed and starts flapping his wings, water starts splashing around, the wind picks up and catches his wings and blows him back to shore. Moose and Cage run over to meet him at the shore.]
Cage: Aww man, you were doing so well! I just don’t get it!
Randall: Aww well, it’s getting dark anyway, we should probably be heading back.
Moose: Come on, we’ll try again tomorrow.
[They all leave the stage.]
