Part 8

SPLIT IN TWO

10,000 Years Ago

De had vanished without a trace.

After a lengthy mixture of discussion and argument, half of the twelve came to the conclusion that De had disappeared out of shame.  They said that he knew the whole life thing was a mistake, but he didn’t know what to do about it, much less how to face his children after creating them for a lost cause.  They said that all of this drove him mad, more or less.  These six said that if they made the earth into a beautiful and structured world, by destroying man, then their father would come back and see what they’d done and be proud of them for saving his Earth.

The other six insisted that their father surely knew best, so they should all do as he told them, which was to do their best and nothing more, and that if they did this then everything would work out right, and if he wanted to be seen then he would be seen.  These six reminded the others that he had said Earth “will be happy in the end”.  They said that their father was happy for man and so they should all be happy for man too.

So, split in two, the twelve gods returned to Earth, six of them vowed at returning peace by destroying all remnant of man’s will, and the other vowed at maintaining the current direction of life on Earth by being happy for man and by doing their best and nothing more.
